The Civic United Front-CUF:Kiswahili Chama Cha Wananchi is a Liberal Party in Tanzania, was formed on 28 May 1992 through a merger of two formerly existing movements - KAMAHURU, a pressure group for democratization in Zanzibar, and the Civic Movement, a human rights organization or Chama Cha Wananchi (CCW) based on the mainland after the Tanzanian constitution was amended in May 1992 to permit the re- emergence of a multi-party political system in the former one-party state.
The party has since established itself as one of the largest party in Tanzania, and a key opposition force to ruling Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
CUF in island of Zanzibar have succeed to be part of a coalition government between 2010-2015, to form what we call Government of National Unity. CUF is, almost active in close to all of the 136 districts in Tanzania.
Many CUF leaders were former stalwarts of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), some of whom had been expelled over disputes about party and government policy. The party received full recognition on 21 January 1993.
KAMAHURU as pressure group in Zanzibar was organized by the late Shaaban Hamis Mloo and Seif Sharif Hamad while the Chama cha Wananchi (CCW),or Peoples Party,as a Civic Movement in the Mainland with James Mapalala as its president and founder.
In the struggle for establishing this party (CUF), many people were contribute in cash and kind both in Mainland and Zanzibar.
